About Us

Where Therapy Feels Like Home

Founded more than two decades ago in Battle Creek, Michigan, Comforts of Home Counseling was built on a simple idea: therapy should feel safe, accessible, and genuinely human. What started as one clinician’s vision has grown into a team of 16 licensed professionals united by that belief.

Our Story

Two Decades of Compassionate Care

Lisa Ottenhoff, LMSW, ACSW, ACHT, founded Comforts of Home Counseling more than twenty years ago with a conviction that the people of Battle Creek deserved better access to mental health care. At the time, long wait lists and limited provider options meant that many individuals and families went without the support they needed.

What began as a solo practice quickly grew as word spread. Lisa’s approach was different: warm, unhurried, and rooted in the belief that the therapeutic environment matters as much as the method. She designed her office to feel like a living room, not a clinic, and that philosophy became the foundation for everything that followed.

Today, Comforts of Home Counseling is staffed by 16 licensed clinicians — LMSWs, LPCs, and LLPs — each bringing their own expertise in areas ranging from trauma and anxiety to grief, couples therapy, and adolescent care. The practice serves individuals, couples, families, and groups, both in-person in Battle Creek and through HIPAA-compliant telehealth across Michigan. The team has grown, but the mission hasn’t changed: quality mental health care, available to everyone who needs it.

What We Believe

Our Values

01

Safety First

The environment matters. We designed every detail of our practice so you feel genuinely safe before the real work begins. Healing starts when you can exhale.

02

Every Path Is Different

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans. Your history, your goals, and your pace guide the process. We listen first and build from there.

03

Access Is Non-Negotiable

Quality mental health care shouldn’t require a long wait or a premium price. We accept most major insurance plans and offer telehealth across all of Michigan.
